High concentrations of reactive oxygen species (= ROS = free oxygen radicals) in the body (oxidative stress) may cause massive damage to a variety of body cells including those of the immune system. Oxygen free radicals are neutralized particularly effectively by secondary plant constituents known as anthocyans. The antioxidant potency of anthocyans is many times greater than that of vitamin C, a popular antioxidant.
